Shin Denyūden Kakumei-hen Ochita Kuroi Yūsha no Densetsu The Legend of the Legendary Heroes Anyway Dragon Ball had an impact on all anime that proceeded it, launching a wave of Shonene Anime series and changing the anime landscape forever.Cover of The Legend of the Legendary Heroes first volume as published by Fujimi Shobo Dragon Ball revolves around Goku as a kid, and he is, well, pretty much just as clueless as he is as an adult, but cute and so naive living in this new world that no matter the fight or how high the stakes, kid Goku manages to make light of it through his extreme naivety. Today, Goku is still working his way to being the strongest being in the multiverse, but he had comedic begins in the original show that started it all Dragon Ball. It wouldn't be tough to argue that going super Sayian is a lot more fun to daydream about than taking off a pair of glasses and wearing tights. He was not only strong and an inspirational figure with his undying urge to protect, but Goku was possibly a bit cooler than the all-American man of Steal. Every young boy wanted to be this being from another planet that was unparalleled in strength. In Dragon Ball Z, Goku becomes the new Superman for an entire generation. Movies such as this showed that anime had the ability to tell deep and powerful stories that did not only appeal to children. Also around this time came the prominent Studio Gibli, which produced films such as Spirited Away, Howls Moving Castle, and Grave for the Fireflies. The mantel was passed on in the late '90s early 2000s to shows such as One Piece and Naruto. Shows like Dragon Ball Z, YuYu Hakusho, and Sailor Moon spearheaded anime's growth in popularity. The '90s were when the popularity of anime on a global scale started to rise at an exponential rate, and it has been growing at the same exponential rate ever since. This is when many of the early mecha shows were becoming popularized. With a lack of global connectivity, anime did not have a broad global audience, but a handful reached the U.S. The first ever anime broadcasted was Three Tales, but the first big hit that catalyzed all anime we know today was Astro Boy in 1963, adapted from the Manga. The dawn of modern anime was brought to life in the 1960s when Manga artist Osamu Tezuka took a Disney animation technique but with less funding and reduced frame counts, created something of his own, and set a precedent for the anime we know today. ![]()
